Someone get me a therapist

I was reading some parenting magazine recently that said that babies explore the world through their mouths. As I was reading this, I glanced up and realized that my toddler seems to have a different medium:

His bare belly. I don't really get it, but for the last couple months, everything must pass the naked belly test. Any different surface - Cash will pull up his shirt and lay on it, press up against it, or drape himself over it. He's done it on the floor, the rug, the fridge, chairs of all shapes and sizes, toys, at friend's houses, out in public....

Weird.

Cash has also at that super resistant stage. Do you want to eat lunch? "Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!" Do you want to play with friends? "Nooooooooooooooo!!!!" Do you want chocolate? "Noooooooooo!!!!!" (Until he realizes what I've just said.) Anyhow, what's more, is that ever since we left Miami, the answer has a slightly different take. Cash, do you want a snack? "Nooooooo! Go to therapy!" Do you want to go play with your cousins? "Noooo! Go to therapy!" Cash, we're going to the store now. "No store!!! THERAPY!!!"

Ok, while Ryan and I may understand that the not-so-agile chubby babies go to physical therapy and you like playing with all the cool toys there, I'm not quite sure how that translates for you or us when you keep screaming for a therapist in public.

And great, since Ryan left, I've been trying to talk to Cash about it, but all it seems to keep coming up as is, "No Daddy airplane. Daddy go to therapy." "No, daddy not go home, Daddy go to therapy!"

We may have to pretty soon if all this keeps up.

And while it seems he is getting more mischievous, maybe it's just more clever. Because while I was helping clean this up, even I had to admit - this really is the most effective way to pick out the marshmallows.

On a positive note, this could make my life a little easier:

Cash has figured out how to use the mouse by himself. For any of you who have used the Starfall website, I get so tired of sitting there clicking on the mouse every 3 seconds, and Cash could do it for hours. So now - even more self-entertainment!

This post had me cracking up. I'm trying to imagine myself as Cash, and why I would want to feel everything on my belly. Sometimes I'll bet it's a little bit of a surprise- bellies are sensitive areas and something cold would be a bit of a shock. Maybe that's kinda fun. All the soft, silky things probably feel pretty good. It's fascinating to see what kids come up with and why.

Oh, and I love Shauna's hair! Wow! She's beautiful anyway, but this is a fun new look.

I was inspired by your blog to cut Jan's hair for the first time in a few years. It went pretty well. Thanks again.

I can only imagine, as I laugh heartily to myself, walking past you in a public place and hear Cash yelling at you to go to therapy. Priceless. I think you should search to see if anybody has blogged about the random family they walked past and heard the oldest child prescribing a shrink.

I was laughing so hard reading this to Shawn that I started crying...

I can only conclude that it must have something to do with children concieved in NY!
My 1st child: normal...no bizarre quirks
My 2nd child: (also concieved in NY)....a weird bird!~ He likes peoples pits (meaning arm pits)...he puts his hand in there and rests it there...or even, I am embarrassed to admit, he even pulls his fingers out and smells them....SOooooOOO strange!!

How do you catch everything on camera?? You must wear it around your neck. :) I love your posts, they make my life seem not so crazy! Hope you are having fun with your family!

I love educational computer games. Hailee learned the mouse (lucky for me a mac mouse is super easy to use) and it's been heaven ever since. She loves the computer and I think that is how she started reading so early.

I love reading your blog, the post about waxing so hard that I had to stop reading it to Todd to stop from laughing until I was crying. Fun stuff.

lol. lol. lol. I love Cash's long hair. Cute. I cut Simon's again and despite your warnings I cut it too short. Oops. Well, at least I don't have to cut it for a while and at least I didn't just use the longest clipper attachment like I was tempted to.

Jen, I promised myself this year I would keep up with my blog more and everytime I go to mine, I just have to check yours. I know people tell you this time and time again, but you really are 100%, absolutely, HILARIOUS!!! I get a great laugh everytime. Cash is so incredibly smart..I really think he is gifted. The therapist screams are so outrageous...I bet you just die when he does that in public! We miss you around here and I hope you had a great x-mas with your family. Talk to you soon!

Hahaha! Love the therapy comments. I think you'll all need one after awhile.

And I sang praises when my daughter learned to click the mouse for Starfall. Thank goodness I didn't have to hear "ahhh" all the time if I didn't want to. Do you get the starfall camp song stuck in your head? I do. (She now knows how to turn on the computer, open the internet, go to her game and play all she'd like. Awesome when holding/feeding two babies to just tell her to go play on the computer and she does.)

I should try the belly test out. I could definitely get my belly in some good places at this stage in my pregnancy. We all have our weird little quirks don't we? Hopefully he still won't be using the belly test while he is dating! Funny kid.

Coleman has been doing a few weird things lately as well. I should blog about them soon.

zane learned his entire alphabet on starfall and how to read. starfall is the true church. jk i am glad you found the love.

noggin.com and sesame street's web page are also good alternatives, but I love starfall for him best.

So hilarious! I had to laugh at "therapy" and also at the story about Ryan's first impression on your family! I'm just catching up on Post-Christmas blog posts now and it's mighty entertaining!

It is so wonderful when they learn to use the mouse. Maneuvering the mouse is a difficult skill to learn. Very advanced boy. That's what you get with intelligent parents.

Hi - i'm a random reader but I was wondering what kind of things you do with your babies @ therapy. I have a tubby 9 month old who doesn't do much so I'd love some tips if you've got em. I love your blo!

Well, frankly I don't know that I think therapy helps all that much. But what they do there is some massage and some stretching (I guess to make sure muscles aren't limiting them?), they sometimes have them stand and kind of hold on to their hips and push down (I think they said it helps bone stabilization?), they put them on little push cars and stuff to help their balance, they will sort of put the babies body on the therapists leg so they're at more of an incline and then have the babies hands on the floor - but the incline helps build muscle when they push up, they put them on all fours to try to get them used to bearing weight like that, and they do some baby sit ups - pull their arms a little and help them sit up but trying to let the babies do the work. I'm sure there's more they're doing, this is just what I notice. Yeah, you would think they would give me a regimen to do at home or something but they haven't. Like I said though, I'm not really sure it helps.

So so funny Jen!

The bare belly thing! Cash is one of a kind. See - another example of how your blog material is way better than anything I can come up with. Love to read your blog!
A small daily joy for me!

That's hilarious! I love it when kids fixate on quirky things that need to be explained anytime someone give you that raised eyebrow look. And thanks for mentioning that website, Addie loves it! She spends time on Playouse Disney, but not much education there. Enjoy your flight back to Miami, and enjoy your mom's company while you have it. We miss you here in the great snowy world we call home.
